Led by Fitz-Hugh Endowed Chair in Design Excellence, Neil Frankel, FAIA, FIIDA, the studio premise investigates the notion that the central focus for design excellence relies on the connection of social science strategy within the context of universal design values. This studio emphasizes the criteria and aspiration for a design strategy that will influence human performance in 21st Century Architecture. The intent of the studio is for each student to defend his or her design strategies through applied research.
When the studio was first envisioned, Neil Frankel asked Spirit of Space to document each year and build a film series. Each film is told from the perspective of the students as they discuss a specific topic (i.e. research, design process, transitioning into the profession, etc.). As we continue this series, each film stands on its own, but collectively, it uniquely shares the overall vision of the studio.
